GYPSY Wife QAL TOP

This quilt is seriously like an addiction for me -- once I started working on the blocks I was hooked on completing them quickly, well the assembly part was no different. I started on the left side of the quilt with sections 8 - 10 rather than with section 1 (which to me is more like starting in the middle of the quilt.)
Then I kept going
and going
This whole process was just to much for my assistant but he gets high marks on being adorable.
Section 6 is a bit more complicated so I did it in sections. That way it would line up better and go together easier when I attached it to the other sections. Mine is a bit modified from the initial pattern but still has all the major components and I think it fits the flow better.
I outgrew my smaller design wall so I put the large one back up and it really started looking like a quilt at that point. I knew that my obsession was in full gear now and this quilt was going the be a favorite for sure.
I got so wrapped up in putting it together that I forgot to take a picture as I was putting the last section together --- hey it happens. I finally took another pick when there was just the one seam left to complete the top.
I took outside picks of the completed top, right now it's 60 by 68, with boarder it would be around 66 by 74. Either way a good snuggle size or good for hanging on the wall in my stairwell.
One of the first things my hubs asked when it was finished was how was I going to quilt it. (You know he may be a keeper yet) Honestly I don't know but I am looking for suggestions.

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend with lots of quilting and family time.

  1. This looks great! I can't believe how fast you were able to finish this one. Borders or no borders it would look great.

  2. It does look nice framed in charcoal. You could even throw a few Sawtooth strips in there to break up the actual frame a bit.. mmm.. so pretty though, no matter what you do..

  3. Well now! This is a fantastic finish! I do love seeing the progress shots. And like the look of the quilt with the grey border as imagined by seeing the design wall. For the quilting... I would suggest honeycomb quilting by Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts. http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.ca/2013/01/honeycomb-quilting.html

  4. That is really lovely, I would go for a border on it, but I think dark grey might detract from it, how about one of the darker colours from the quilt.
I wouldn't know about quilting, I'm a bit stuck on just stipple and loops myself.
    It is really lovely though.

  5. I can see why it was so addictive....it looked like a ton of fun to make! I'm not a border gal myself....but am sure the grey would be perfect....

  6. This has turned out beautifully. What about a pieced border, to keep with the fun scrappy theme of the quilt?

  7. It looks amazing- I don't know that you need a border at all.

  9. I love your quilt! I have the pattern sitting right next to my chair and keep admiring it. I guess I should just do it!

  11. Lovely! I contemplated a border on mine as well, but in the end decided to go without. As for quilting, before i got the hairbrained idea to hand quilt the whole thing, i was set on straighline stitching it on the vertical. But i'm not a FMQ by any means so my ideas for quilting generally involve only straight lines!! I'm sure what ever you decide it will look fantastic!

  12. You've done a good job and it is an eclectic mix of fabrics that ties together nicely. I'd go with no border.

  13. Your assistant is a hoot. I have no idea how to quilt it either, but I'm much further away from having to consider that right now! I have mixed feelings about the dark border, but I did really like the way your design wall color framed the quilt... Excited to see what you decide!

  14. Oh, wow!!! What a fantastic Gypsy's Wife. :D I am positively drooling. (And I like Lorna's suggestion of the honeycomb quilting - running vertically, it should complement this top perfectly.)

  16. Love this, simply love! I would leave this without a border at all - it's already looking great, frame might organize it and I prefer its great havoc. Amaizing!

  18. That's an awesome quilt. I like it without a border and the honeycomb pattern would be awesome and give it texture. I like the idea of lines in the quilting to enhance the piecing and draw you right into all those beautiful blocks. Great finish!

  19. I think a dark border like the grey and especially at 3 inches or so would not do this quilt justice! It will detract from the flow of the quilt and close it in. I don't think you need a border at all but if you do one make it plain and one of the paler colors in the quilt. Don't add another design. Remember that less is more and there is already enough going on in the design! Just my 2 cents. XXOO
